Crafting
Crafting is a varied skill which enables players to produce items such as jewellery, armour, and pottery for use or trade. At level 40 Crafting, while wearing a brown apron obtained from the Varrock clothes store, a player can enter the Crafting Guild. Crafting is (along-side Runecrafting) 1 of the 2 Free-to-play skills not mentioned on Tutorial Island. The current minimum requirement to be ranked (at rank 2,000,000) on the hiscores for Crafting is level 40.
Pottery
Pottery is the craft of turning Soft clay into pottery objects. Soft clay can be obtained either by mining Clay and using it with a bucket of water, or mining with a Bracelet of clay, which will remove the need to add water. Once soft clay is obtained, it can be used on a Potter’s wheel to make the object desired, which is then fired in a Pottery oven.

Leather crafting
To begin leather crafting, players need a needle and thread, normally purchased from the Al-Kharid or Rimmington craft shop, and some cowhide tanned into leather. In the free-to-play world, this means visiting the tanner in Al-Kharid, until players are able to enter the guild. Tanning costs 1 coin per ordinary leather, and 3 coins for the hard leather used to make a hard leather body. There is also a more expensive tannery in Canifis. Note: You can also make easy money by buying cowhides from the Grand Exchange for around 129 coins each, going to Al-Kharid, and making the hide into hard leather, which sells for about 181 coins each.
The cattle field east of Lumbridge is a convenient spot for leather crafters, since it is normally largely populated and easy to get to. Since getting from the Al-Kharid tanner to the Lumbridge cow pens frequently requires players to cross the Al-Kharid toll gate, it is advisable for players to complete Prince Ali Rescue to reduce cost. Players can also head north from the gate until they get to Ali the leaflet dropper, where they can go south again on the other side of the fence. Another convenient location to obtain cowhide in a free-to-play world is near the gnome copters as there is a field with cows and a merchant named Beefy Bill who can store your cowhide, flour, and meat for 10% commission nearby. The efficiency of this area is arguable, since the cows are widespread and the area contains many obstacles. The field just south of Falador is also convenient, since there are many more cows together in a smaller place, allowing faster kills. The distance to the bank for this field is longer than the gnome copters field, but shorter than field east of Lumbridge.

Studded leather items are made by smithing steel studs (level 36) and adding them to the completed leather item.
Snakeskin
Snakeskins are found by killing Snakes on the island of Mos Le’Harmless, during the Tai Bwo Wannai cleanup mini-game and during the Temple Trekking mini-game. They can be tanned for 15 coins each, and then crafted using a needle and thread.
Snakeskins are also used to make tribal masks into Broodoo shields. A member can make snakeskins into items of snakeskin armour, as shown on the table below, if they have a needle and thread. However this method is quite rare as it doesn’t give the desired amount of crafting with other things such as jewellery and it can be quite costly accumulating the large amount of snakeskins required.
Yak hide
After starting The Fremennik Isles quest, members can kill Yaks to obtain Yak-hides and make them into Fremennik armour pieces. The Yak hides need to be cured for 5 coins to become craftable. It is not advised to make bodies for experience because you lose an extra hide in the process.

Dragonhides
This is extremely similar to normal leather crafting, except that
- It costs 20 coins to tan each leather.
- Players can only make vambraces, chaps, and bodies.
- It is generally a good idea to use high alchemy on dragonhide bodies or vambraces rather than chaps, as chaps get fewer coins per hide than vambraces.
- Obtaining dragonhides is very slow, but good money.
- Buying dragonhides is faster, but players tend to pay more than the high-alchemy value.
- Players may also attach kebbit claws to any vambraces to make spiky vambraces; these add a +2 Strength bonus to the vambraces, and gives 6 crafting experience. This does not change the high alchemy value for the items.
- Only members can craft dragonhide items.
- using a Sacred clay needle is strongly advised when crafting dragon hides. It more than halves the cost of crafting without a loss of speed.

Battlestaves
The orbs you create through glassblowing can be enchanted at various obelisks. You can then use them to create elemental battlestaves and make a nice profit with high-alchemy. An elemental battlestaff can be created by using a charged orb with a battlestaff. A battlestaff may be bought in Zaff’s Superior Staffs! in Varrock or Baba Yaga’s Magic store on Lunar Isle. The stock at Zaff’s increases if you are wearing Varrock armour obtained by finishing sections of the Varrock Achievement Diary. Baba Yaga’s shop stocks a maximum of 20 staves. Blank staves cost 7000 coins at Zaff’s, and the market price at Baba Yaga’s, which is generally 8000-8300 coins (finished battlestaves with orbs yield 9300 coins after high-alchemy). Given the common practice of players to buy their dayly dose of 64 noted battlestaff items and sell them at a modest profit, it is a very interesting way to level crafting. Depending on GE prices for charged orbs, attaching orbs to a battlestaff can be a low cost way to train crafting. The only catch is the high cost of the items which requires a significant working capital.

| Water battlestaff | 54 | 100 | The water obelisk is located deep in Taverley Dungeon up a ladder by the Black Dragons. Having high Agility will give you access to shortcuts on your way to the obelisk. | |
| Earth battlestaff | 58 | 112.5 | The earth obelisk is located in the members part of Edgeville Dungeon, in level 2 wilderness. You will find it south of the Black Demons, near Chronozon and some Poison Spiders. | |
| Fire battlestaff | 62 | 125 | The fire obelisk is located deep in Taverley Dungeon west of the Black Dragons. Having high Agility will give you access to shortcuts on your way to the obelisk. | |
| Air battlestaff | 66 | 137.5 | The air obelisk is located in the members part of Edgeville Dungeon, in level 7 wilderness. You will find it north of the Black Demons, up a ladder. |
Battlestaves are one of the most profitable things you can make in RuneScape and give from 172 to 210 experience when you do all steps yourself, from making the glass, blowing the orbs, and attaching to staffs.
- Buy lots of buckets! Another way of obtaining large numbers of buckets is by speaking to Bert in Yanille. If you have completed The Hand in the Sand quest he will offer to give you 84 buckets of sand every day. You will also save the chore of filling them with sand.
- Once you have about 500 buckets you can start making battlestaves, skills required:
- Magic: 60 (66 highly recommended)
- Runecrafting: 27 (44 highly recommended, 54 is even better)
- Crafting: 58 (64 highly recommended)
- Quests required: Lost City
- Items required: Buckets, glassblowing pipe
- Collect seaweed on Entrana whilst law-crafting , and burn the seaweed on a range on the way to the bank. (Note that you can burn seaweed on a fire too.) You can sell the laws later.
Arhein on the dock in Catherby will sell you 80 seaweed a day if you talk to him instead of trading him. He will also sell you 40 pineapples, great for supercompost. An alternative is to take charged amulets of glory and bank at Draynor instead. You’ll get more laws and more seaweed this way, but you’ll have to burn later, and plan a trip to the Heroes Guild to recharge your amulets. Another option is to collect it from people dropping in Catherby, or simply buy it from the people doing big net fishing there, or collect in Piscatoris while catching monkfish. Seaweed and soda ash sell for 100-200 coins each.
- Go to the Lost City of Zanaris and fill your buckets with sand. Alternatively, Yanille is a good place to get sand (see below, free daily sand delivered).
- Go to Al-Kharid and make some molten glass.
- Make your glass into orbs.
- Go to Edgeville Dungeon/Taverley Dungeon and then charge your orbs.
- For earth or air orbs: Take appropriate staff (wielded), your choice of armour (worn),fill inventory with uncharged orbs and 3 cosmics for each orb. The earth obelisk is south of the black demons next to Chronozon (part of the Family Crest quest), air obelisk is north of the demons up a ladder. When doing airs, bring a law for a quick tele. For earths, any one click tele will do.
- Use an amulet of glory to teleport back to Edgeville to make faster round trips.
- For water or fire orbs: Take a water (or fire) staff (wielded), your choice of armour (worn), dragonfire shield (worn), 1 anti-poison, a key to get through gate if player can not use either agility shortcut, a worn teleport, and fill rest of inventory with uncharged orbs and cosmic runes (3 per orb). The water obelisk is next to the black dragons, up a ladder and the fire obelisk is west of the black dragons. Note that making water and fire orbs is a really long trip and it’s highly recommended that you make earth or air orbs instead. High agility gives a couple of possible shortcuts in the dungeon, as well as an escape from the water obelisk island using a mithril grapple & crossbow.
- Once your cash is exhausted from buying staves, attach all the orbs to the battlestaves and make 9300 coins each with high alchemy.
- The most economical method is to have Varrock armour 3 to buy 64 staves daily from Zaff, talk to Bert to get your 84 buckets of sand delivered daily (requires Hand in the sand quest), and buy seaweed from from Arhein in Catherby. This limits you to 64 a day at the highest profit margin. Collect materials for several days and then actually make and alch your staffs
Cape of Accomplishment
For players with level 99 Crafting, a Cape of Achievement can be bought from the Master Crafter in the Crafting Guild. The cape will cost 99,000 coins, just like all other capes of accomplishment. The Crafting cape of accomplishment can be used as a substitute for a brown apron to allow entrance to the Crafting Guild.
